The vent flap on the outside of my house is broken and chewed up. Is that worth fixing, or should the whole hood be replaced?

On most East Foothills homes the exterior hood is original to a 1960s–80s build, and by now the flapper is either seized with lint and paint or has been pried apart by something living in the open space above Alum Rock. If the housing is still solid and only the flap is stuck, cleaning and freeing it is usually enough. If a rodent or bird has worked the opening, the flap is gone, or the metal has gone brittle in the dry summer sun, replacement makes more sense than patching. We'd rather swap a hood than leave you with one that won't close against downslope wind. One thing we don't do is add a rodent screen with fine mesh across the outlet. That traps lint fast. A proper hood with a working damper is the right fix.

My laundry is in the garage on the lower level and the vent has to climb up to get outside. Does that change anything?

Yes, and it's the most common layout we see up here because of how these slope lots were graded. A vertical or steeply rising run works against the dryer, and lint that doesn't make it all the way out slides back down and packs at the bottom of the rise or in the first elbow. Same story on the stepped split-level floor plans where the duct crosses most of the house before it finds daylight. We clean these from both ends where we can get access, and we check that the section at the base of the climb is actually clearing, not just the part near the hood.

What makes a dryer vent cleaning here cost more or less?

Length and access drive it. A short run straight out a garage wall is on the simple end. A long horizontal run across a stepped plan, or a climb from a lower-level laundry with several elbows, takes longer and sometimes needs access from more than one point. Damage found at the hood (a broken damper or a nest that has to come out before the duct will clear) adds to it. We tell you what we're seeing while we're there, not after.

How soon can someone come out?

East Foothills is a short run for us, so scheduling is usually within a few days. Same-day is sometimes possible if a slot opens, and we'll take a same-day call seriously if your dryer is running hot, cycles are dragging on, or you can smell hot lint. Those are not things to sit on. If it's routine maintenance, booking a few days out gets you a better time window.
