My dryer takes two or three cycles to finish, and it's worse in winter. Is that the vent or just the damp air up here?

It's usually both, and they feed each other. Scotts Valley sits in cool, damp, shaded air for much of the year, so laundry comes out wetter and the dryer has to push more moisture through the duct. That moisture turns loose lint into a packed, sticky layer that clings to the duct wall instead of blowing out the hood. Once that layer builds, cycles get longer, which pushes more damp air through, which builds more lint. Rodents treat a stuck-open or broken flap as a doorway into a warm duct. We pull nests, needle mats, and chewed-up debris out of Scotts Valley vents regularly. The second common failure is the duct run itself. With laundry rooms on lower or garage levels in these split-level and multi-story homes, the run climbs a long way to reach daylight, and long vertical runs with flex duct sag, kink at the elbows, and trap lint at every low point.

The duct run drives it. A single-story home where the dryer sits against an exterior wall is straightforward. Most homes here aren't that. A 1970s–90s split-level with the laundry on the lower or garage level and a long uphill or vertical run to a hood two levels up takes more time, more rod length, and often access from both ends. Damp, adherent lint also doesn't brush out in one pass the way dry lint does. If the hood is buried in moss and needles or has a rodent nest behind it, that's extra work too. Older cabins and rebuilt properties can go either way. Some have short simple runs, others have improvised ducting from a past remodel. We'd rather look at the run before talking numbers than guess from the phone.

How fast can you get out to Scotts Valley?

Usually within a few days. Coming over the ridge, we tend to group Scotts Valley jobs on the same day rather than making the trip for one house, so if you're flexible on the day we can often fit you in sooner. Winter storms are the main thing that shifts a schedule. During heavy November through March rain, access to steep driveways and sloping lots can be a problem, and we won't put a ladder against a wet, moss-slick wall to reach an upper-level hood.
