My laundry room is in the middle of the house, not off the garage. Does that make the vent harder to clean?

It makes it longer, which is the real issue. A lot of Saratoga homes put the washer and dryer in a dedicated interior utility room, so the duct has to travel through a crawlspace or up into the attic to reach an outside wall. That means more feet of pipe, more joints, and usually at least a couple of turns before the air gets out. We clean from both ends where we can reach them, the dryer connection and the exterior hood, and use rotating brush line long enough to cover the full run rather than just the first stretch behind the machine. If the duct disappears into the attic, we'll trace where it terminates before we start, since guessing wrong wastes your time and ours.

Our roof vent sits under a big oak. Is that causing the problem?

Often, yes. The oak and redwood canopy over a lot of these lots drops leaf litter, small twigs, and heavy pollen right onto roof terminations, and the moist lint coming out of the dryer catches all of it. The flap gets held open or pinned shut, and once it stops closing properly you also get birds and rodents taking an interest. If your vent exits through the roof under tree cover, expect to need it looked at more often than a neighbor with a clear wall termination. Expect the hood itself, not just the duct, to be a big part of what needs clearing.

What usually fails on the older ranch houses here?

On the 1950s–70s custom ranches, the most common finds are flexible foil or vinyl duct still in service under the house, crushed sections where something got set down on the duct in the crawlspace, and joints that have pulled apart so the dryer has been quietly venting lint into the crawlspace for years. Long horizontal runs also tend to sag between supports, and every sag becomes a low spot where damp lint collects. On the post-1990 rebuilds and larger custom homes the duct is usually rigid metal, which is better, but those houses tend to have longer runs and more elbows, so they load up at the turns instead.

Why does drying take forever in our hillside house even though the dryer is fine?

Multi-level floor plans on the hillside lots usually mean the duct goes up vertically with offsets to get around framing. Lint doesn't fall cleanly down a duct with jogs in it. It collects on the ledges each offset creates, and those spots build up faster than a straight run would. The dryer still runs, the drum still heats, but the air can't move, so cycles stretch out and the laundry room gets warm and humid. Clearing the offsets is the fix. Sometimes we'll also recommend rerouting if a run has more turns in it than it needs.
