My dryer takes two or three cycles to finish a load. Is that a vent problem or just the bay air?

It's usually both, working together. East Palo Alto sits low and close to the marsh edge, so the air coming into your laundry area carries more moisture year-round than it would a few miles inland. Damp intake air already slows drying. But that same moisture is what turns ordinary lint into a sticky film inside the duct instead of a dry fluff that blows out on its own. Once that film starts building, airflow drops and cycles stretch further. If your run is short and straight through the back wall, like most homes here, a clear vent should not need repeat cycles. Two or three is a sign the duct is loaded.

The vent hood on the outside of my house is rusted and the flap barely moves. Can you deal with that?

Yes, and it's one of the most common things we find here. Salt carried in off the bay eats at exterior hoods, screws, and flap hinges. On the older single-story tract homes the original hood is often still in place, and after decades the damper either seizes open or seizes shut. Stuck open lets birds and rodents in. Stuck shut chokes the dryer and backs moisture into the wall. We clean the duct first, then replace corroded hoods and hardware where it's needed. We'd rather tell you the hood is fine than swap something that still works.

How fast can someone get out here?

East Palo Alto is a compact service area for us and the runs are usually short, so we're generally scheduling within a few days. Same-day does come up when a cancellation opens or when you call early enough in the morning. We'll tell you honestly whether we can make it that day rather than holding a slot we can't fill. What goes wrong with vents in the older homes around here?

A few patterns repeat. The 1950s tract houses often have laundry in a rear service area, a kitchen alcove, or the garage, with a short run straight out the back wall. That's a good layout, but a short run gets ignored for years because nothing dramatic happens. What we find is a hard lint crust on the duct wall from the damp air, plus flex hose behind the dryer that's been crushed when the machine was pushed back against the wall. In garages and tuck-under spaces, the connection at the wall is often loose, so lint dumps into the garage instead of outside. Newer townhomes and multifamily units usually have longer routed runs, sometimes vertical, and those hold more buildup per foot.
