Our dryer duct is original to the house — is it worth cleaning, or should we just have it replaced?

Most of the time it's worth cleaning first. A lot of Los Altos Hills homes from the 1950s through the 70s have rigid metal duct running a long way through an attic or crawlspace, and rigid duct that's still intact cleans up well no matter how old it is. What changes the answer is the material and the condition. If we find sections of old flexible foil or plastic duct, crushed elbows where the run turns to get around framing, or joints that have separated inside a crawlspace, cleaning alone won't fix the airflow problem. We'll tell you which parts of the run are fine and which section is actually causing the restriction, rather than pushing a full replacement because the house is old. On the newer rebuilds around town, the duct is usually sound and it's the roof termination that's the problem.

What actually goes wrong with dryer vents in this area?

Two things dominate here. First is the length of the run. Sprawling single-story floor plans put the laundry room deep in the middle of the house, so the duct travels a long horizontal distance through the attic or crawlspace and turns several times before it reaches a wall or roof cap. Every elbow slows the air and gives lint a place to pile up. Second is what's happening at the outside end. In oak woodland, roof caps collect spring pollen, leaves and acorn debris, and the flap or screen stops moving freely. On the exterior side-wall hoods, dry summers and unpaved driveways coat the opening in fine grit that binds with lint into a mat. Homes with more than one dryer running regularly hit both problems faster.

How fast can you get out here?

Los Altos Hills is a normal part of our service area, so scheduling is usually within a few days, and often sooner in the slower part of the week. If your dryer is taking multiple cycles to dry a load or shutting itself off on a heat sensor, tell us when you call and we'll treat it as urgent rather than routine. Can you do it the same day I call?

Sometimes, depending on where our crew already is that day. Same-day is more realistic if you're flexible on the arrival window. It's less likely if your termination is on a roof, since we'd rather schedule that properly than squeeze it into the end of a day, and even less likely for households with several dryers, which need a longer block. Call and ask. If we can't do same-day we'll usually offer the next available slot rather than pushing you out a week.
